The Ecological Dimension of Electronic Document Management: How to Reduce Harm to the Environment
In today’s world, where climate change issues and threats to the environment are becoming increasingly pressing, it is important to find ways to make our daily actions more sustainable and environmentally friendly. And here, electronic document management can play a key role. Mykhailo Vigovskyi, a member of the Intecracy Group Supervisory Board, spoke about this during a presentation on the advantages of electronic document management technology for Ukrainian enterprises of various forms of ownership on October 20, 2023.
1. Reduced Paper Usage
Transitioning to electronic document management can significantly reduce the need for paper. This, in turn, lowers the demand for logging, which is important for biodiversity and as natural carbon sinks.
2. Reduced Energy Consumption
Paper production, processing, and disposal require significant energy consumption. Electronic document management allows for saving this energy, reducing CO2 emissions.
3. Reduced Transportation Costs
Traditional document management requires the physical movement of documents between participants. This is not only a slow process but also incurs transportation costs. Electronic circulation eliminates this need, reducing emissions associated with transportation services.
4. Resource Efficiency
Electronic systems allow for storing vast amounts of information in a minimal physical space. Compared to paper archives, this can significantly reduce the need for premises and other resources.
5. Waste Reduction
Paper documents, especially those with short-term importance, quickly become waste. Electronic document management reduces the amount of such waste, lowering the need for their disposal.
“The environmental benefits of electronic document management are obvious. It allows companies not only to optimize their business processes but also to contribute to the fight against the environmental problems facing our planet,” believes Mykhailo Vigovskyi.
