Every day, cybercriminals become more inventive in their methods of attacking Internet users. Among the most popular methods are sending suspicious links and attachments that can harm your device or steal confidential data. We have prepared several recommendations.
1. Do Not Open Links from Strangers
The most obvious, yet very important advice. If you receive an email or message from an unknown person, be especially careful with links and attachments. This could be an attempt to hack.
2. Check the Sender’s Address
Even if the email came from someone you know, make sure the email address is genuine. Cybercriminals can use addresses that look very similar to real ones.
3. Be Careful When Downloading Files
Do not download or open files if you were not expecting to receive them. Attachments may contain malicious software that infects your device.
4. Use Antivirus Software
Modern antiviruses can detect suspicious links and attachments, even if you accidentally clicked on them. Always keep your antivirus updated.
5. Study the URL
Before clicking on a link, always check its address. If the domain looks suspicious or unlike what you expect to see, do not risk it.
6. Use Two-Factor Authentication
Two-factor authentication adds another layer of protection to your accounts. Even if attackers gain access to your password, they still won’t be able to log in without an additional code.
7. Update Software
Regular software updates ensure the closure of known vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit.
“Internet security starts with you. Be attentive, educated, and careful, and you will be able to avoid most threats from suspicious links and attachments,” comments Mykhailo Vyhovskyi, a Ukrainian IT expert, member of the Supervisory Board of Intecracy Group.
Official Recommendations
The SSSCIP published official recommendations on security rules. Serhii Balashuk, Director of IQusion IT LLC, advises to carefully review them.
We also provide them.
1. Trust information only from official, verified sources:
- verified pages (with a blue checkmark) of state authorities on social networks;
- websites of state authorities, whose addresses must end with “gov.ua”.
2. Carefully check the sender and content of messages
- do not follow links or download files from strangers;
- verify information received in messages with other sources and on official pages of state bodies.
3. Do not enter any personal data if you are not sure about the website’s security. Additionally, remember that https at the beginning of a website address indicates a secure connection, http – not secure (your data and even passwords can be stolen).
4. Download only licensed software and applications from official developer websites.
5. Do not download pirated copies of programs. It’s better to find a free licensed alternative.
6. If you want to use a chatbot – check it using a bot checker.
